Peter Belonging to William McGowen To Be Sold (1815)

In Liberty County Inferior Court Chambers, Riceboro, Liberty County, on March 6, 1815, Samuel Lewis petitioned for the sale of “a certain negro man named Peter,” who had been used as collateral by one William McGowen of Liberty County on a debt he owed to Lewis in the sum of $226.31. McGowen had defaulted on the debt, thus Peter was liable to be sold. The Judge ordered that Peter be sold.
