Bryan County Marriage Contract (Penney/Campbell)

Enslaved People Named: Jim, Merriam, Cuffy [alt: Cuffee], Watty, Nanny, Billy, Dolly, Rose, Julia, Aleck, China, Thomas, Laura, July, Patience, Lampster, Catherine, Eliza, Josephine, Nancy

On November 23, 1859, Jane Penney, formerly Jane Stiles, of Bryan County, entered into a marriage contract with Catlett Campbell, of Merriwether County, Georgia, with Benjamin Stiles acting as her trustee. Put into trust for her were:

  • a 600-acre tract of land in Bryan County known as Frugality Hall, bounded north and west by land belonging to the estate of Clay, east by land belonging to William Patterson, and south by land belonging to McAllister;
  • “the following twenty Negro Slaves to wit – Jim, Merriam, Cuffy [alt: Cuffee], Watty, Nanny, Billy, Dolly, Rose, Julia, Aleck, China, Thomas, Laura, July, Patience, Lampster, Catherine, Eliza, Josephine, Nancy
  • all other property to which she might become entitled in the future.
