On July 18, 1857, Israel Smith, Liberty County, sold to John Butler, Bryan County, for $425 “the following property, to wit: (a certain Negro girl named Patty about eight years of age which Negro girl I warrant to be sound and well in body and mind, and to be a Slave for life..” Witnessed by B.J. Sims. Recorded in Bryan County Superior Court on July 20, 1857.
