Enslaved People Named: Caroline, John, Grace, Louizer, William

On April 26, 1859, Elizabeth Perry, Bryan County, sold to Henry E. Edwards, Effingham County, for $1535 “the following property to wit two negroes named Caroline about thirty three years old John about nineteen years old which negroes I warrant to be sound and slaves.” Witnessed by Isaac Perry. Recorded in Bryan County Superior Court on July 14, 1859. Appended was a statement saying “the transfer of the within property was made on the eighty day of February eighteen hundred and fifty four to which I have this day made a title is the same this 26th April 1859.” Elizabeth Perry signed by mark, indicating illiteracy.

Also on April 26, 1859, Henry E. Edwards, Effingham County, sold to Elizabeth Perry for $1535 “the following property to wit three negroes one named Grace a woman, aged about thirty four years old Louizer [alt: Louisa] about nineteen years old William about sixteen years old which negroes I warrant to be sound & to be slaves.” Witnessed by Isaac Perry. Henry E. Edwards also appended a statement saying that the transfer of the “property” was made on February 8, 1854. Recorded in Bryan County Superior Court on July 14, 1859.
