On January 23, 1860, Gordon I. [or J] Goodson, Bryan County, sold to Henry E. Smith, Bryan County, for $1200 “a certain negro fellow named William about thirty-three years of age, about five feet six inches high of dark complexion, which Negro fellow I warrant to be sound and well in body, in mind, and to be a slave for life.” Witnessed by Wm. [William] Harn. Recorded in Bryan County Superior Court on February 24, 1860.
