On January 28, 1857, John P. Maxwell, Bryan County, used as collateral on a promissory note to Matilda A. Harden, Bryan County, for $1500 “the following named Negro Slaves, to wit: Bess and her children Molly, Jackson, Billy Peggy and Isaac; Catharine and her children Joe, Silvy, Samuel and Lucretia; August and his wife Nanny, and the future issue and increase of the female slaves.” Witnessed by Edward J. Harden. Recorded in Bryan County Superior Court on January 17, 1857.
