1807 Bryan County Chattel Mortgage (Maxwell/Bolton & Co)

On February 24, 1807, in Chatham County John Jackson Maxwell, attorney for William Maxwell, Bryan County, used as collateral on a promissory note for $1761.22 to Carter Bolton & Company, merchant of Savannah, “all those six negro slaves herein after named & the property of the said William Maxwell namely, man David, aged about 28 years, man Christmas aged about 32 years, woman Bess aged about 30 years, woman Mary aged about 25 years, woman Sary aged about 23 years of age and Man Pee [as seen] aged about 24 years of age.” Witnessed by Jabez Y. Jackson, R’d Richardson. Jabez Y. Jackson probated the signatures on February 25, 1807.

On the same day and in the same place, John Jackson Maxwell, attorney for William Maxwell, Bryan County, used as collateral on a promissory note for $479.02 to Robert and John Bolton, merchants of Savannah, “all those four negros Slaves herein after named and the property of the said William Maxwell as follows namely, man Well [or Will], aged about 38 years woman Isabella aged about 23 years, woman Mary Well’s wife aged about 38 years and woman Sary aged about 20 years of age.” Witnessed by Richard Richardson and J.Y. Jackson, who probated the signatures on February 25, 1807.
