Elizabeth & Catharine Hastings
Executrixes of Archibald Haistings } Plea

And the said Charles Thorp by Geo. [George] Foster his attorney comes, and defends the force, and injury, when etca and says that he is not indebted, and that he did not undertake in manner and form as they the said Elizabeth and Catharine have declared against him, and of this he puts himself upon the Country.

[Previous page or pages missing] Further sum of six hundred, and twenty four pounds like sterling money for the hire and labour of thirteen negroes from the year one thousand seven hundred and eighty untill the year one thousand seven hundred and eight four at the rate of twelve pounds a year for each of the said negroes, or slaves, during the said time, which said sum of twelve pounds per year is what the defendant reasonably ought to have for the hire, and labour of the same, while they were in the possession of the said Archibald Haistings deceased – and which other sum of one hundred pounds for the said negro Robin, the defendant ought reasonably to be allowed to have which said several sums of money the defendant craves an allowance of, and will insist on the trial of this cause that the same be set off and all owed to him against the demands of the said plaintiffs, if any they may have, pursuant to an act of the Legislature passed the twenty third of December one thousand seven hundred and eight nine.
