“State of Georgia, Liberty County } This Indenture made this 13th August 1879 between Edie Miller an unmarried woman the mother of the child hereinafter apprenticed, of the one part and Richard D. Miller of the second part, Witnesseth that the said Edie Miller in consideration of the promise made to her by said Richard D. Miller as well as in consideration of one dollar to her in hand paid at and before the sealing and delivery of these presents, has by these presents, let out and apprenticed and does let out and apprentice her infant Daughter Lula Miller now aged about fifteen months, till she becomes eighteen years of age, to the said Richard D. Miller.

And the said Richard D. Miller hereby agrees and covenants with the said Edie Miller for and in consideration of the apprenticeship above mentioned to take charge of the said Lula Miller, to raise, educate, and teach her the elementary branches of the English Language, and further to teach her house-service, gardening etc also habits of Industry, Honesty and Morality; and govern her humanely as if she were his own child [last two words underlined].
