On May 23, 1796, John Dollar, a Liberty County Justice of the Peace, recorded that Mrs. Cathrine Collins of Sunday, Liberty County, appeared before him to swear that Mrs. Mary Wells, late of Sunbury and deceased, called her to her in her final illness to say that she intended to leave “a certain negro wench named Sue the property of her the said Mary Free at her death, and as she did not know whether she should make a will she the said Mary Wells requested her the said Catharine Collins and Thomas Nelmes to take notice and bear witness of her the said Mary’s declaration, and come forward and testify after her death that was her will and desire that she the said negro wench Sue should be Emancipated, and free from Slavery after her the say Mary’s death.” Recorded in Liberty County Superior Court on June 7, 1796.
