On September 6, 1820, Benjamin Mell, planter of Liberty County, used as collateral on a promissory note of $2000 to Nathaniel Law, Liberty County “the following negro slaves; viz. Old Bob, Scipio, Chloe, Prime, March and Rose.” Witnessed by Joseph Law, Jr. Recorded in Liberty County Superior Court on September 18, 1820.

Nathaniel Law appended a sentence to the deed stating that it would become void as soon as Benjamin Mell Senior paid the $2000 in full to the Bank of Darien, for which he (Law) was the endorser. Recorded in Liberty County Superior Court on September 21, 1820.
