On June 1, 1820, John Brown, Liberty County, used as collateral on a promissory note of $194.80 to Nathaniel Law, Liberty County, “one certain negro slave, by name Reuben.” Witnessed by Jesse Ham. Recorded in Liberty County Superior Court on June 9, 1820. [NOTE: John Brown signed by mark, indicating illiteracy.]
