On November 4, 1816, John S. Quarterman, planter of Liberty County, gifted to Margaret Rebecca Norman, the daughter of Joseph Norman and Mary N. Norman, “a certain negro girl named Bess, the daughter of my negro woman slave Judy.” Witnessed by Benjamin Mell, Richard S. Baker. Recorded in Liberty County Superior Court on July 3, 1817.
