Enslaved People Named: Cato

On January 30, 1816, Liberty County Sheriff James Lambright sold to Audley Maxwell for $455 “the following negro man slave, named Cato, as the preperty of the Estate of the said James M. Stuart.” The Sheriff had seized Cato from the estate based on a writ obtained through a lawsuit by Samuel Lewis, administrator of the Foster estate and surviving co-partner, against William Thompson and Susannah Thompson, administors of the James M. Stuart estate. Recorded in Liberty County Superior Court on February 24, 1817.
