Bill of Sale (Mell/Hines)

Enslaved People Named: Nanny

On July 4, 1815, Liberty County Sheriff James Lambright  sold to Charlton Hines, on behalf of the estate of William Way Senior, for $330 a “woman slave named Nanny.” Lambright had seized Nanny from Thomas Mell, deceased of Liberty County, based on a writ of fieri facias issued after a successful lawsuit by John Grieves against Thomas Mell in Liberty County Superior Court. Lambright put Nanny up for public auction on July 4 1815 at the Liberty County Courthouse, and Hines was the highest bidder. Witnessed by Samuel Lewis. Recorded in Liberty County Superior Court on July 15, 1815.
