On June 22, 1813, Stewart Gaither, of Washington County in Maryland, appointed “my trusty friend,” Samuel Lewis of Liberty County, Georgia, as his attorney to obtain from John Stacy, of Liberty County, the payment of $500 “for three negro boys named Dick, Tom, & Scipio, left by me in his possession, to be paid for by him on the first of June next, or otherwise to be at my disposal, agreeably to a written agreement made this day with the sd [said] John Stacy.” If Stacy did not pay, then Lewis was to “dispose of such of them as may not be paid for by him to any other person for cash.” Witnessed by Henry F. Brand, Jas. [James] Graham. Recorded in Liberty County Superior Court on July 25, 1814.
