On February 21, 1814, Cyrus Gildersleeve of Bloomfield, Essex County, New Jersey, sold to Charles William Rogers, of Liberty County, Georgia, for $7600 “twenty six negroes: namely, John, Nat, Mingo, Prince, Charles, Bob, Adam, Jacob, Jim, Titus, Abraham, Solomon, Peter, Affy, Minda, Phillis [alt: Phyllis], Sally, Moll, Sarah, Delia, Maria, Keziah, Amelia, Rose, Celia, Nancy, now residing on the plantation in Midway, conveyed by me to said C.W. Rogers by deed bearing even date herewith.” 

At the same time, Reverend Cyrus Gildersleeve and his wife Frances Caroline, sold to Charles William Rogers the above-referenced plantation for $3000. It was described as “all that plantation, tract of land and premises whereon the said Reverend Cyrus Gildersleeve lately resided, situate in Midway in the County of Liberty and State of Georgia, formerly the property of Colonel John Elliott deceased, beginning on the Southeast of the public road leading from the Church in Midway to Savannah, and in the line of a fifteen acre lot formerly of the Estate of William Norman deceased; and from thence running along the said public road, North forty four degrees East eighty three chains and twenty eight links; thence along the said public road, North twenty six degrees East eighteen chains and thirty links to the Limerick road, South seventy eight degrees East sixty three chains to lands late of James Cochran deceased; thence, with the line thereof South two degrees East seven chains and fifty links to lands of James Audley Maxwell, formerly of Colonel Maxwell deceased; thence, along the line thereof, South eighty eight degrees West forty five chains and seventy five links; thence along the same, South two degrees East seventeen chains and seventy five links to a dogwood stake; thence along said Maxwell’s land South eighty eight degrees West fifteen chains and seventy five links; thence along the same, South forty five degrees West twenty chains; thence along the same South two degrees East forty six chains and seventy five links to lands of John Couper, formerly William Norman’s; thence along the line of lands of said John Couper, and also of William Norman, South eighty eight degrees West forty four chains; thence along the lands of the Estate of William Norman deceased, North forty seven degrees West fourteen chains and twenty links to the beginning; containing about three hundred and fifty seven acres…” 

The terms of payment included transfer of Charles W. Rogers’ house and lot on Spring Street, No. 80, in New York City. 

Recorded in Liberty County Superior Court on April 9, 1814. 

On July 4, 1814, Charles W. Rogers, physician of Liberty County, sold to John Elliott for $3600 “my plantation on Midway, lately purchased of the Rev’d Cyrus Gildersleeve.” The location of the plantation was said to be bounded on the north by lands of Maxwell, north and west by the public road, south by the estate of Norman, and east by Estate Maxwell, “being all the land purchased by the said Rogers of the Rev’d Cyrus Gildersleeve…and containing three hundred and fifty seven acres, more or less…” Witnessed by William Ward. Signed also by Anna W. Rogers, who also relinquished her dower rights. Recorded in Liberty County Superior Court on July 14, 1814. 

On the same day, Charles William Rogers sold to John Elliott for $8700 “the following negroes, viz. Nat, John, Mingo, Prince, Charles, Toney, Adam, Jacob, Jim, Titus, Abram, Solomon, Peter, Minda, Phillis, Sally, Moll, Sarah, Delia, Maria, Keziah, Emelia, Celia and Nancy. Recorded in Liberty County Superior Court on July 14, 1814.
