Marriage Contract (Law/Brown)

Enslaved People Named: Rubin

On August 17, 1809, Mercy Law, the widow and relict of Charles Law, entered into a marriage contract with John Brown, both of Liberty County, naming Joseph Law as her trustee. Because Mercy was entitled to property that had not yet been divided from the estate of Charles Law, the contract agreed that when the division was done, a schedule of it would be annexed to the marriage settlement and that this property in addition to  a “certain Negro Slaves [SIC] named Rubin the property of the said John Brown” were to be put into trust for Mercy Law. Witnessed by James C. Bowler. Recorded in Liberty County Superior Court on October 3, 1809.
