Marriage Contract (Ladson/Irvine)

Enslaved People Named: January, Billy, Jim, Cora, Doll

On December 6, 1809, William F. Ladson and Margaret Irvine, both of Liberty County, entered into a marriage contract, with John Elliott and John Dunwoody, also of Liberty County, as her trustees. Put into trust for Margaret were “the negroes January Billy Jim Cora & Doll now of the said Margaret Irvine, or such as may hereafter be given or bequeathed or conveyed [to her,” as well as 1/8 of a 500-acre tract on the Crooked River in Camden County, 1/8 of two lots in Sunbury, 2/8 of the Dunair Tract in Liberty County which was bequeathed to Margaret by her mother the late Mrs. Ann Irvine, and 200 pounds sterling bequeathed to Margaret by John Fordice of London. Witnessed by Cyrus Gildersleeve, J. [or I.] A. Cuthbert. [NOTE: Date recorded not given.]
