Enslaved People Named: Celia

On April 25, 1808, Liberty County Sheriff Josiah Wilson sold to Jeremiah Cuyler for Joseph Jones for $51 “a certain Negroe wench named Celia the property of the said John Jones.” Wilson had seized Celia from the estate of John Jones based on a writ of fieri facias obtained by suits against the estate by M & J Johnson Jr, Edward Swarbric, Lewis Prudehome, James Johnston Jr, and others in Liberty County Superior and Inferior Courts. Wilson put Celia up for public auction at the Riceborough Courthouse on April 5th. Cuyler, acting for Joseph Jones, was the highest bidder. Recorded in Liberty County Superior Court on June 6, 1808.
