On March 2, 1801, in Bryan County, James M. Stuart, Bryan County, manumitted “my Negro woman by name Abby, formerly the property of the Estate of Samuel Burnley, hereby relinquishing all my right, title and ownership in & to the said Negro woman named Abby and forever dissolving the relationship of Master and Servant between myself and the said Negro Woman named Abby, and hereby granting her all the liberties and priviledges which free Negroes and Mulattoes are entitled to by the Laws of the said State. Witnessed by William Tanner, Sam’l [Samuel] Tanner. Jame M. Stuart appointed as guardians for Abby William Stuart, Josiah Stuart, and Charles Stuart. Recorded in Liberty County Superior Court on July 29, 1805.
