Enslaved People Named: Nero, Jack, Isaac

On November 5, 1804, James Holmes, planter of Liberty County, sold to Mary Christie, widow of Sunbury, for $1000 “all those three negros to wit, Nero, Jack, and Isaac, the two first being negro men & the last named a stout negro boy.” Recorded in Liberty County Superior Court on November 12, 1804. 

On November 6, 1804, Mary Christie, widow of Sunbury, gifted to her grandson Adam Holmes, then an infant, naming as his trustee Dr. Adam Alexander, also of Sunbury, “the following Negro Slaves to wit, Nero, Jack and Isaac, the two first being negro men and the last named a stout negro boy.” Added was: “And further be it understood that the said negro slaves remain in the possession of Mr. James Holmes and that the proceeds arising from their labour be applied by him & at his discretion to the maintenance and education of my grandson Adam.” Recorded in Liberty County Superior Court on November 12, 1804.
