On May 8, 1797, John Evans, Liberty County, “out of my own free will that I have for my Negroe wench named Pender [alt: Penda] have by these presence [SIC, presents] declared for her faithfulness to me in my lifetime do by these presents set her free at my death, I say, to be free holy [sic, wholly] to her selfe forever & her issue so that her nor her issue may not be counted as any of my property at my death but intirely excluded from any person or persons that shall act or have to do with my Estate hereafter or at my Death.” Witnessed by John Ashmore. Probated on February 14, 1800, by Joshua Allston, who swore that he had seen John Evans and John Ashmore sign this indenture.
