On June 29, 1792, James Powell, gentleman of Liberty County, sold to Jonathan Fabian, planter of Liberty County, for 2000 pounds “the following Negro Slaves to wit, Will, Scipio, Cuffy, Jack, OKelly, Allick, Cato, Simon, Toby, Dick, Pompey, Plenty, Fanny, Sue, Polly, and her four children Rose, Peter, Charlotte and Sandy, Sarah, and her four children Abraham, Jenny, Elsey, and Isaac, Venus, Millay [alt: Milley], and her child, Phebe and Doll.” Included in the sale was a 688-acre tract of land on the North Newport River originally granted to James Reed, bounded east and south by the North Newport River, north by lands belonging to the estate of Samuel Jones and west by lands of Joseph McGowen, as well as a tract of land known as the Milligan Hammocks granted to Josiah Powell, bounded east by St. Catharine’s Sound and Bear Island River and west by salt marshes, and 100 acres of marsh land granted to Josiah Powell bounded east by the Medway River and west by land originally granted to John Mulryne.

The land and enslaved people had originally been used as collateral by Josiah Powell on a promissory note dated November 15, 1787, for 1500 pounds to James Powell. Josiah Powell not having paid what was due, James Powell came into possession and sold it all to Jonathan Fabian. He also transferred the promissory note to Fabian, and invested in him the power to collect the amount owed, if possible. Witnessed by Joel Walker, Jacob Wood. Recorded in Liberty County Superior Court on July 4, 1792.
