On August 20, 1787, Samuel West, planter of North Newport District, used as collateral on a promissory note for 1500 pounds sterling “money of Great Britain” to Elizabeth Munro “thirty two negro slaves viz. Scipio, Old Ben, New Negroe Ben, Jupiter, James, Wiltshire, Cyrus, Jacob, Little Joe, Big Joe, Sam, Abraham, Tony, Bacchus, Peggy, Beck, Young Silvia, Old Silvia, Old Phillis, Young Phillis, Belinda, Maria, Phoebe, Delia, Tenor [alt: Tenah], Byna [alt: Binah], Ryna [alt: Rinah], Phillis, Sue, Bob, Dembo and Elsey [alt: Elsy], together with all and singular their future issue.” Witnessed by William Fitzpatrick, Stephen Files. William Fitzpatrick appeared before a Justice of the Peace on February 6, 1790, to swear that he had seen Samuel West sign the above deed. Recorded in Liberty County Superior Court on February 8, 1790.
