On November 15, 1787, Josiah Powell used as collateral on a promissory note of 1500 pounds sterling to James Powell, both of Liberty County, “the following named Negroe Slaves, Will, Scipio, Cuffy, Jack, O’Kelley, Allick [alt: Ellick], Cato, Simon, Toby, Dick, Pompey Plenty, Fanny, Sue, Patty and her four children, Rose Peter Charlotte and Sandy, Sarah and her four children, Abraham, Jeanny Elsey and Isaac, Venus, Milley, and her child Pheby [alt: Phoebe] and Doll,” as well as a 688-acre tract of land on North Newport River, originally granted to James Read Esquire and sold by the Commissioners of Confiscated Estates as the property of Benjamin Head deceased to the said Josiah Powell. The land was bounded on the east and south by the North Newport River, on the north by land belonging to the estate of Samuel Jones, and on the west by land of Joseph McGowen. Also included was a tract of land known as the Milligan Hammock, granted to Josiah Powell, and bounded east by St. Catharine’s Sound and Bear Island river, and west by salt marshes, as well as 100 acres of marsh land granted to Josiah Powell, bounded east by the Midway River and west by land originally granted to John Mullryne. Witnessed by Claud Thomson, Alexander Bissett, Stephen Files. Recorded in Liberty County Superior Court on January 5, 1789.
