Enslaved Persons Named: Jacob, Betty

On February 1829, Jesse H. Campbell stated that a mortgage to him from John C. Broughton “of negroes,” recorded in Book I, page 328, on February 5, 1829, had been transferred to Joseph Cumming in order to “secure the payment of my note for two hundred dollars of this date, within interest thereon until the first of February 1830.” Joseph Cumming stated on February 23, 1830, that the mortgage had been satisfied. Recorded in Liberty County Superior Court on May 17, 1830. [NOTE: Although the names of the enslaved individuals were not mentioned in this record, the original mortgage gave their names as Jacob and Betty.]
