Enslaved Persons Named: Nanny, May

On July 1, 1828, Liberty County Sheriff Benjamin Mell sold to Paul H. Wilkins for $452 “certain negro slaves, viz. Nanny and May.” Liberty County constable Stafford A. Somersall had seized them from the estate of Thomas F. Bacon, after a judgment was obtained against the estate by the Bank of Darien by F.R. Whitwell and Paul D. Hathaway. They were sold at auction at the Liberty County courthouse on June 3, and Wilkins was the highest bidder. Recorded in Liberty County Superior Court on September 11, 1828.
