Marriage Contract (Broughton/Jurdine)

Enslaved Persons Named: Derry, Moses, July, Grace, Judy, Betty, Lucy, Mary, Lisby [alt: Lisbe], Rose

In December 1803, John Broughton and Mary Jurdine, both of Liberty County, entered into a marriage contract, with James Carter and Nathaniel Law, same place, as the trustees. Put into trust were “the following negro slaves” that Mary Jurdine was possessed of at the time, namely “Derry, Moses, July, Grace, Judy, Betty, Lucy, Mary, Lisby [alt: Lisbe] & Rose.” Witnessed by Jos. [Joseph] Jones, Jno. [John] Peacock Jun. On March 4, 1828, Joseph Jones swore before E. Baker, Clerk of Liberty County Superior Court, that he had witnessed John H. Broughton sign the above document in the presence of John Peacock Junior. Recorded in Liberty County Superior Court on March 25, 1828.
