Enslaved Persons Named: Nancy, Bella, Tom

On July 1, 1826, Thomas J. Shepard, of “Zebulon in the County of Pike and State of Georgia,” used as collateral on a promissory note of $1228.26 to Charles W. Rockwell, Charles Kelsey, Charles McIntire and George Ralph, copartners in the firm Charles W. Rockwell and Company, merchants of Savannah, “three negroes, viz. Nancy, a wench twenty eight years old; Bella, a child about seven years old, and a negro man Tom, a shoemaker by trade, about thirty years of age,” in addition to Lot $5 in the town of Riceborough, adjoining the lots of Samuel J. Axson and Daniel Stetson. Witnessed by Thomas B. Daniel. Recorded in Liberty County Superior Court on April 30, 1827.
