Enslaved Persons Named: Sue

On July 4, 1826, Samuel S. Law, guardian of Edmund Bacon, a minor of Liberty County, sold to John D. Hathaway “a negro girl named Sue (said Sue being a part of the personal estate of the said Edmund Bacon a minor)…about sixteen years of age.” Law had first applied to the Liberty County Inferior Court for permission to sell part of Edmund Bacon’s personal estate, given that he was a minor, and once he received permission, he advertised in a public newspaper thta he would put Sue up for sale at the Liberty County Courthouse on the first Tuesday in July 1826 between the hours of ten and two. Hathaway was the highest bidder at $250. Sale witnessed by B. [Bartholomew] A. Busby. Recorded in Liberty County Superior Court on March 8, 1827.
