Marriage Contract (Holms/Maxwell)

Enslaved Persons Named: Kit, Israel, Peter, Trim, London, Isaac

On January 2, 1826, Sarah M. Holms and Joseph E. Maxwell entered into a marriage contract, with James B. Screven and J.A. Maxwell as her trustees. On March 20, 1826, at Sunbury, an alteration of the contract was agreed upon, involving the following exchanges of “certain negroes therein specified”:

-“the negro man named Kit, belonging to C.O. Screven, be exchanged for the negro man Israel”
-“the negro man, Peter, belonging to C.O. Screven, be exchanged for the negro man Trim”
-“the negro man London, belonging to C.O. Screven, be exchanged for the negro man Isaac.” 

Witnessed by Alexander M. McIver, John Stevens Jr. Recorded in Liberty County Superior Court on April 6, 1826.
