Marriage Contract (Russell/Way)

Enslaved Persons Named: Hector, Jacob, Renty, Jeffry, Hannah, Sandy, Lydia, Bristol, Doll, Charlotte, Monday, Dinah, Frank, Sophia, Billy

On April 27, 1824, Edward W. Russell, of Wayne County, and Susannah S. Way, of Liberty County, entered into a marriage contract. Charlton Hines and William J. Way were to be her trustees. As part of the contract, the property Susannah brought into the marriage was specified in order to be put into trust for her: “the following negro slaves; viz. Hector, Jacob, Renty, Jeffry, Hannah and her three children Sandy, Lydia & Bristol; Doll and her two children Charlotte & Monday; Dinah and her child Frank; and Sophia and Billy.” Witnessed by J. [John] Hamilton Couper, Mary Eliza Robarts. Recorded in Liberty County Superior Court on May 8, 1824.
