Marriage Contract (Bacon/Griffin)

Enslaved Persons Named: Old Dick, Sally, Joe, Nanny, John, Maria, Daniel, Frank, Richard, Sarah, Kate

On April 9, 1838, Susan Ann Bacon entered into a marriage contract with MacPherson Berrien Griffin, with William N. Way and W.Q. Baker as her trustees, all of them from Liberty County. The contract put into trust for Susan Ann Bacon a group of 11 “negro Slaves” of whom she “is possessed in her own right”: Old Dick, Sally, Joe, Nanny, John, Maria, Daniel, Frank, Richard, Sarah & Kate. Witnessed by Joseph Way, R.S. Baker, John S. Norman. Joseph Way probated the contract on April 14, 1838. Recorded in Liberty County Superior Court on April 24, 1838.
