On December 23, 1835, James Darsey, Liberty County, used as collateral on a promissory note of $221 to Ralph King, William King and Bayard E. Hand, factors doing business in Savannah, Chatham County, under the name R & W King “the following named negro Slaves, two in number viz Jane and Jacob, together with the future issue and increase of the female slave…” Recorded in Liberty County Superior Court on February 4, 1836. [NOTE: James Darsey signed “by mark,” indicating illiteracy.]
