Marriage Contract (Leonard/Goulding)

Enslaved Persons Named: Isaac, Dick, Abraham, Judy, Die [alt: Dye], Betty, William, Mariah, Prince, Richard, Joe, Leah

On January 21, 1836, Rowland S. Leonard, merchant, entered into a marriage contact with Mary Goulding, spinster. George W. Walthour and Alexander M. Sandford [alt: Sandiford] acted as her trustees. All were of Liberty County, except Sandford, who was from Bryant County. “Whereas the said Mary Goulding is possessed in her own wright of a considerable estate in the said County of Liberty & State aforesaid,” her property was put into trust with the above-mentioned trustees: “the following named negro slaves, twelve in number, viz. Isaac, Dick, Abraham, Judy, Die [alt: Dye], Betty, William, Mariah, Prince, Richard, Joe & Leah, together with the future issue & increase of the said female Slaves.” She retained complete control of her “property” and it was not to be liable to her husband’s debts. Witnessed by Thomas Quarterman, and William B. Fleming J.I.C. Recorded in Liberty County Superior Court on February 10, 1836.
