Charles West “of the Parish of St. John and Province of Georgia (Planter)” wrote his will on December 24, 1766. Although the will did not name enslaved people, it suggests that the Charles West of this estate inventory was the same man. William Jones, Robert Jones, and James Andrew were witnesses to the will. He asked that his executors put his rice crop up for sale to pay any debts. They were then to divide into three separate lots “all the remainder of my lands for my three sons Charles Samuel and William,” who were to each receive his lot when reaching the age of 21. He left to his wife Esther a maintenance out of the plantation while she remained a widow. He mentioned that she had had a former husband. The remainder of his personal estate was to be divided into four lots for his four children “Elizabeth Charles Samuel and William.” He appointed as executors his friends Stephen Williams, Richard Baker, and John Stewart.
