On May 19, 1835, James S. Bulloch, Liberty County, used as collateral on a promissory note of $15,900 (due over five years) to Andrew Low & Robert Hutchinson, partners and merchants in Savannah doing business under the name A. Low & Company, “ “the following forty three negro slaves named Joe, Sam, Grace, Crawford, Nancy, Sam, Tobby [alt: Toby] William, Ben, Sally, Cretia & her infants, Amy & her child Grace, Fanny, Betty, Titus, Betty, Prince, Mariah, Peter, Joe, William, Franklin, Tom, Affee & her child Frank, Bill, Rachell & her child Phoebe, Mary, Hagar, Harriett, Ned, July, Daniel, Ben, Dublin, Joe & Sina [or Lina].” Also used as collateral was a 955-acre tract called Cedar Hills Plantation in Liberty County near Riceboro, and “all the undivided one six part of the real estate of the late John Elliott,” consisting of a plantation in Liberty County called Laurell View, and his undivided one third part for his lifetime of “the following fifty two negroes of the Estate of the late Ann Powell, namely, Elsey [alt: Elsy], Stephen, John, Israel, Hagar, Tenah, Elcy, Mary, Phoebe, Hester, Harry, Betty, Deanna [or Dianna], Betty, Peter, Frank, Patty, Sandy, Bob, Sue & Sam, Affy, Peter, Boson, Ben, Stephen, William, Peggy, Hester, Jinsey, Delina, Will, Doll, Tom, March, Peggy, Adam, Fortune, little March, Rose, Lucy, Jack, Rose, Edmond, Tom, Charlott [alt: Charlotte], Hanah [alt: Hannah], Nancy, William, Billy, Jinny [alt: Jenny], Lucy, & Ned…” Buloch noted that all of the above listed land and “negroes” were under mortgage by him to Charles W. Rogers, dated May 12, 1831 and recorded in Book 22 folio 316 of the Chatham County Superior Court Clerk’s Office.
