On July 2, 1842, Wm. [William] J. Way and Joseph Way, planters of Liberty County, used as collateral on a promissory note of $700 to Sarah C. Ward, Chatham County, “the following negro slaves, together with the future issue & increase of the females (viz) Hagar, Ann, Sandy, Matilda, Charlotte, Sary, & Henry.” Witnessed by S.A. Fraser, J.I.C.L.C., E. Way. Recorded on July 18, 1842, by E. Way, Clerk. [NOTE: Written on this deed was: “Satisfied April 2, 1846. Geo. W. Walthour. Recorded 11th April 1846, J.S. Bradwell, Clerk.”]
