On August 2, 1842, Francis J. Chapman, Edmund Rogers, Simon Harrington, and Hendley F. Horne, planters of Liberty County, used as collateral on a promissory note of $3450 to John O. Baker, of Pennsylvania, “the following Negro slaves, twelve in number & named as follows, Bob Ritter Washington Toney Charity Charles Betty Sue Jacob Haywood Raky [alt: Rakey] & Billy…” Witnessed by E.H. Bacon Notary Public, Wm. [William] G. Martin, J.I.C.L.C. Recorded on August 15, 1842, by E. Way, Clerk. [NOTE: Written on this deed was: “Satisfied in full Wm. J. Way for J.O. Baker. Recorded 8th June 1846 J.S. Bradwell Clerk.”]
