Enslaved Persons Named: Lane, Tena [alt: Tenah], Harriet

On March 21, 1842, Jeremiah Elders, of Liberty County, used as collateral on a promissory note of $944 to Penelope Archer, also of Liberty County, “three Negroes to wit: Lane a woman about twenty eight years of age & her child Tena about one year old, and one Negro girl Harriet about fifteen years of age…” and 1250 acres of land in Liberty County on the waters of Canouchee [alt: Canoochee] containing the place where Jeremiah Elders “now lives,” and one half of 1750 acres of land in Bryan County on the Canouchee River, which was sold as the property of Thomas Jones of Bulloch County. Witnessed by Emma W. Shelby, John H. Smith, J.P. Recorded on April 30, 1842, by E. Way, Clerk. [NOTE: Written on this deed was: “February 17th 1844, To the Clerk of Liberty County Superior Court. This is to certify that a certain mortgage recorded by me against Jeremiah Elders said mortgage consisting of a tract of land containing twelve hundred acres and three Negroe Slaves the said mortgage drawn in favor of me & recorded in my name Penelope Archer, now Penelope Moody. This is to certify that the said Mortgage is taken up satisfied & destroyed & therefore request that the mortgage should be receipted on the record. [Signed] Penelope Moody. Recorded this 29th February 1844. E. Way, Clerk.”]
