Marriage Contract (Mara/Chapman)

Enslaved Persons Named: Harriet

On February 2, 1842, Amanda Mara, of the town of Riceboro, and Elijah Chapman, of the same place, entered into a marriage contract, with Charlton Hines, of the same place, and James E. Mara of New Bedford, Massachusetts, as her trustees. The contract put into trust her property, defined as “a negro woman named Harriet,” and half of the tract of land called Edgely, containing 750 acres in Liberty County, bounded north by lands of the LeConte estate, south by lands of [can’t read name], east by the Darien road, and west by lands of William Jones, plus $5000 in notes. Witnessed by Josiah S. Law, Edward J. Delegal. Recorded on March 26, 1842, by E. Way, Clerk.
