On July 7, 1841, Valentine Grest used as collateral on a promissory note of $700 to James D. Stevens “the following four Negroes namely, Doll aged about thirty years, Hagar about twelve years Richard about fifty five years June about twelve years…” Witnessed by Hansford Andrews, Edwd [Edward] Q. Andrews, J.P. Recorded on August 10, 1841, by E. Way, Clerk. [NOTE: Written on this deed was “Cancelled in full this 20 March 1842. James D. Stevens. Recorded this 5th April 1842. E. Way Clerk.”
