Enslaved Persons Named: Miley, Clarrinda [alt: Clarinda], Peggy, Stephen, Mary, Cloe [alt: Chloe], Nancy, Hagar, Rose, Edward
On February 1, 1840, William S. Baker purchased “the following named Slaves with the issue of the Females viz. Miley, Clarinda, Peggy, Stephen, Mary” from the executors of the John Lambert estate (Thomas Mallard, John Dunwody, William Q. Baker, Ezra Stacy and William Jones).
Baker apparently intended to pay for them on credit. He and Bartholomew A. Busby used as collateral on a promissory note to the executors of John Lambert’s estate (Thomas Mallard, John Dunwody, Wm. Q. Baker, Ezra Stacy and William Jones) “the following named Slaves, with the issue of the females to wit: Miley, Clarrinda [alt: Clarinda], Peggy, Stephen, Mary, Cloe [alt: Chloe], Nancy, Hagar, Rose, Edward…” Witnessed by W.E.W. Quarterman, S. Spencer, J.I.C.L.C. Recorded on March 24, 1840, by E. Way, Clerk. [NOTE: Written on this deed was “Satisfied 12 May 1847. W. S. Baker, Acting Exor. Recorded 10th May 1847. J.S. Bradwell, Clerk.”]
In 1848, Baker stated that he had transferred these people to the minor children of the late Thomas Baker, the purpose for which he had originally purchased them.
