On January 12, 1836, John O. Baker, Frances A. Baker, and John Dunwody, trustee for Frances A. Baker and her children, sold to Samuel Spencer, planter, all of Liberty County, for $12,150 a 500-acre tract of land in Liberty County, as well as “the following negro slaves viz: Die & her children Titus, Milly, Betty, Sary Bella Peggy & her grandchildren Sam Cinder Nancy, Susan and Cloe, also Betty & her child Dianna & her children Caty, Sam, Will, Betty, Harriet, Clarissa, Venus, & Eliza, also Elsey & her children Prince & Jane, & grandchildren Peggy & Tom, also a woman called Patty & one called Bella, also three other Negro men called Jeffry, Neger [started to write Polydore, then crossed it out] thirty one in all. [NOTE: The count is 31 without Polydore.] The land was described as “granted to John O. Baker with the exception of ten acres, in the north corner of said tract, on which is a settlement, made by John Minton, which excepted ten acres was conveyed to Rosena Minton, which said tract of five hundred acres is bounded on the south east by land of Charlton Hines on the north & west by lands of John Minton & on all other sides vacant, together with all the improvements, privileges & appurtenances to the same belonging…” Witnessed by David Anderson, Wm. [William] J. Way, J.I.C.L.C. Recorded on June 8, 1838, by E. Way, Clerk.
