Estate Settlement (Johnson/Johnson)

Enslaved Persons Named: Joe, March, Lucretia

On May 26, 1846, James H. Johnson purchased from Mary Johnson of Liberty County for $3888 her portion of the estate of her late husband William Johnson, Liberty County. This included one half of the real estate and “these negroes to wit Joe, March, and Lucretia owned by the said William Johnson the said property valued at nineteen hundred and forty four dollars, on the condition and understanding that the said James H. Johnson shall well and truly support and maintain the said Mary Johnson his mother for and during the term of her natural life.” He was to provide her board and lodging in his family, “good and sufficient” clothing in accordance with “her former and present station in Society,” and medical care. Witnessed by Wm. [William] B. Gaulden, E.S. Shepard. Recorded on June 1, 1846, by J.S. Bradwell, Clk.

On the next page (pp. 474-5), there is another deed with information about the land Mary Johnson passed to James H. Johnson from her husband’s estate. Then, on pp. 475-6, there is another deed dated May 20, 1846,  in which Mary Johnson, Liberty County, sold to James H. Johnson for $1250 “the following named slaves viz. Joe a negro man aged about thirty years, dark complexion about five feet five inches high, March a male slave aged about thirteen years dark complexion about four feet seven inches in height, Lucretia a female slave about twelve years of age dark complexion four feet six inches high said slaves formerly the property of my late husband…” Witnessed by W.B. Gaulden, E.J. Sheppard. Recorded on June 1, 1846, by J.S. Bradwell, Clerk.
