Bill of Sale (White/Sheppard)

Enslaved Persons Named: Sylvia, Scipio, Suckey

On May 16, 1846, Henry H. White sold to Richard S. Baker, Wm. [William] G. Martin and S.A. Fraser, as trustees for Mary J. Martin Sheppard, “one certain negro slave named Suckey [alt: Sucky],” who was part of the estate that he had inherited from his deceased wife Elizabeth Hamilton, of McIntosh County, by virtue of their marriage settlement dated December 21, 1840, which was recorded in the McIntosh County Superior Court because they were both from McIntosh County at the time. According to this bill of sale, that marriage settlement had reserved to Elizabeth Hamilton all the property she brought into the marriage, which included “negroes named as follows to wit Sylvia Scipio Suckey and their future issue or increase.” Witnessed by J.S. Bradwell, C. Hines, J.I.C. Recorded on July 14, 1846, by J.S. Bradwell, Clerk.
