Enslaved Persons Named: Washington

On August 2, 1846, Liberty County Sheriff Enoch Daniel sold to F.J. Chapman [likely Francis J. Chapman] for $500 “a certain negro slave to wit Washington.” Sheriff Daniel had seized Washington from his owner, Samuel Spencer, with a writ of fieri facias after the latter defaulted on a mortgage to John O. Baker of Liberty County. Washington was put up for sale at the Liberty County court house after the sale was advertised, and Chapman was the highest bidder. Witnessed by S.A. Fraser, J.I.C.L.C. Recorded on May 29, 1846, by J.S. Bradwell, Clk.
