On May 6, 1846, Harriet S. Handley, Liberty County, used as collateral on a promissory note of $800 to Sarah C. Ward, New Haven, Connecticut, “the following negro slaves viz. Daniel, Nelly, Moses, Sam, January, Hercules, Susan and Sima / the last two named negroes are under mortgage to Geo. [George] W. Anderson and Brother merchants Savannah).” Witnessed by Thos. [Thomas] J. Mell, R.Y. Quarterman, T.W. Quarterman, J.P. Recorded on May 27, 1846, by J.S. Bradwell, Clk. [Written on this deed was “Satisfied in full June 15th 1852. Geo. W. Walthour agent for S.C. Ward. Recorded this 21st July 1852. S.A. Fraser, Clerk L.C.”]
