On March 1, 1844, Edward E. Pynchon, Chatham County, used as collateral on a promissory note of $8000 to Mrs. Mary E. Parsons and her children, Liberty County, via her trustee George W. Walthour “the following negro slaves, being twenty three in number to wit Isaac (a carpenter), Jack, Bristol, Phebe [alt: Phoebe] and her five children, Louisa, Sylvia, Abby and Mary and Byron; old Juba, Peggy and her three children, Nanny, Clarinda and William; Mary and her child Paul, Daphne and her child Grace, Bellah and her child Joe, Sally and her two children, Mary and Betty, with the future issue and increase of the female slaves. Included in the collateral was “all that tract of land, situate lying and being on the desert in Liberty County being lot Number Three (No 3) of an original tract the plantation of the late Samuel Lewis, and which was divided into lots, for the purpose of Division among the devisees, containing four hundred and eleven acres, bounded on the west by the public road to Hinesville, on the east by lands of Doctor West (now G.W. Walthour), on the north by lot (No 2) number two, part of said tract drawn by Edward E. Pynchon, and on the south by lot number four (no 4) drawn by C.R. Lewis. Included also was “all and singular the edifices, buldings, hereditaments, rights, members and appurtenances to said tract of land belonging, or in any wise appurtaining,” as well as all the right, title and interest of Edward Pynchon in the land or slaves.
